Don't be afraid to experiment
Ok, so first of all piping is a skill as old as cake! It seems like everyone growing up had a grandma with the perfect flick of the wrist to make beautifully piped cakes, but this skill scared me more than any other cake technique out there! Something about the piping seems so fragile and I have heard it over and over again from piping experts, "practice makes perfect!" Although this advice is absolutely on point, I have found that these gaudy, overly piped vintage cakes are very forgiving! No need to practice for days on end to get a beautiful outcome!
Have fun and experiment! Try different piping tips, group together different tips and sizes on a cake board to see what looks cute! I am a visual person, It always helps me to see my ideas before committing them to a cake. Experiment away!
Piping bag troubleshooting
If you are finding that the piped details aren't coming out uniformed, make sure your bag is twisted or sealed with a piping bag clip. This makes it easier to squeeze the icing out of the piping tips! If this doesn't do the trick, your icing may be to stiff. Add a teaspoon of water at a time and stir up the icing until the consistency gets softer and easier to work with!
Here are all of my favorite Amazon finds for making this vintage style cake!
Cakes are sweet and should NOT cause stress! So pour your favorite glass of bubbles and have fun!
Cheers,
excellent post! Love the vintage cake. My business will be cakes that have herb blossoms and subtle herb flavors. It is so nice to meet you!
